Showy Milkweed: A Monarch Butterfly Favorite
Asclepias speciosa, or Showy Milkweed, is a perennial flowering plant that attracts a wide array of beneficial insects, including bumblebees, ladybugs, hummingbirds, and, most importantly, the endangered Monarch butterfly. Monarchs rely on milkweed as a host plant, and its large, tender leaves provide food for their caterpillars.
Sadly, Monarch populations have declined by nearly 96% in recent decades, largely due to the decrease in available milkweed plants. By purchasing Asclepias seeds, you can help reverse this trend and support the recovery of these beloved orange and black creatures.
Sowing and Growing Showy Milkweed
Asclepias seeds require a process of stratification for successful germination. Place the seed packet in the fridge for 3-6 weeks before sowing. Sow the seeds indoors, 6-8 weeks before the last frost, at a shallow depth of 1/16 inch, as they require light to germinate. Transplant or direct sow outdoors when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed.
Showy Milkweed thrives in full sun, with rich, well-drained soil and consistent moisture until germination. The plants will mature to a height of 24-40 inches and can be spaced 12-18 inches apart.
By planting Showy Milkweed, you can directly contribute to the success of the Monarch butterfly's migratory pattern and population recovery. Combined with other nectar-rich flowers, you can create a vibrant butterfly garden that will bring joy and beauty to your outdoor space.
