Rose campion (Lychnis coronaria), a striking and colorful perennial, is a marvelous addition to many flower gardens. With its silvery pale green leaves and vivid magenta blooms, rose campion's colors pack a punch in mid to late summer. Its colors look wonderful when paired with a cool color palette, including blues, purples, and other shades of pink. Gardeners can try incorporating rose campion alongside plants like nigella, bellflowers, phlox, and yarrow in their cottage gardens. The plant's leaves form a basal rosette, similar to lambs' ear, but with a key difference: the blooms do not discolor after they peak, which is a common occurrence with betony (lambs' ear).

Rose campion thrives in partial or full sun, but it can have a tendency to dry out during hot summers. Gardeners may consider placing it in a spot with morning sun rather than afternoon sun. If the plant happens to reseed in full shade, it will usually not bloom, so any volunteers can be relocated to a sunnier area.

While rose campion is not too fussy about soil, it does best in well-drained soil. Gardeners should avoid planting it in wet areas. Once established, the plant is fairly drought-tolerant, making it a good addition to a dry garden area. It has no special watering needs, and gardeners can water it according to their usual schedule in the cottage or perennial garden. If the plant shows signs of drooping or burning during a heat wave, a bit of extra water may be necessary.

Rose campion typically flowers from early to mid-summer. While the plant generally does not require fertilizer, gardeners with very thin soil may consider adding compost to the planting area, which can help it reseed more vigorously.
