Asclepias syriaca, commonly known as common milkweed, butterfly flower, silkweed, silky swallow-wort, and Virginia silkweed, is a species of flowering plant. Milkweed is a very important plant, not only for its beauty but also because it serves as a host for the beloved MONARCH butterfly. Monarch larvae feed exclusively on Milkweeds, meaning that the absence of Milkweed would lead to the absence of Monarchs. It is also an essential nectar plant for bees and other insects.

The common name Milkweed was given to this plant due to its milky juice, while the scientific name comes from Asclepius, the Greek god of healing, owing to the plant's numerous folk-medicinal uses.

Regarding the plant's requirements, Milkweed prefers full sun to part shade and average to dry soil. It blooms during the summer and is hardy in zones 3 to 9.

The perennial common milkweed adds beautiful pink and lilac blooms to any garden. It is open-pollinated, heirloom, and non-GMO, and it is native to the Midwest and eastern U.S. It thrives in full sun and loamy, mesic soil, but it can also tolerate a wide variety of conditions.

Milkweed attracts monarch butterflies, bees, and many other pollinating insects. It is easy to grow, requires little maintenance, and is well-suited for zones 3-9. If planting in the spring, Milkweed seeds need to go through a period of cold stratification.
