Perfect for the front yard flower border, grow this semi-dwarf variety from Zinnia seeds. Zinnias are hardy plants that will do well in all types of weather. This Lilliput Zinnia mix has shades of pink, yellow, white and red, and these flowers will blossom 6 - 8 weeks after sowing the flower seeds. This shorter growing variety features a wide range of brilliant colors and double 1 inch round pompon-like blooms. Lilliput Zinnias are the perfect size for container plantings or grow them in the front of the flower border. They prefer full sun and soil that does not hold water. Hummingbirds love them, but thankfully, deer do not bother them.
Zinnias require full sun. They thrive in hot areas as long as they get enough moisture. They like rich soil and appreciate a slow-release fertiliser in the spring when they are planted and a booster shot of fertiliser in mid- to late simmer. Zinnias need to be watered if there is less than an inch of rain each week, sooner if they appear to be wilting. They will reward you with hundreds of colourful flowers for just a little care. If you are growing some of the older, heirloom varieties of zinnias, a little pinching back in early summer will make them bushier and produce side branches with more flowers. There is typically little problem growing zinnias, except in extremely humid conditions where a powdery mildew can sometimes form. Protect young plants from slugs and snails. Deadhead spent flowers frequently to prolong flowering. Water regularly. Water deeply by soaking soil and avoid spraying foliage.
If there's a color that you can think of, there's more than likely a Zinnia to match it. From red, orange, yellow, green, violet, pink, purple, blue, white- you get the picture. Zinnias come in an array of sizes as well. Zinnia blooms can be 6 inches wide, others might only bloom to 2 or 3 inches. No plant can give you more color for less work. Full sun is really all that's required, although some of the newer hybrids will even bloom in partial shade. As for water, they don't need much, since they're from hot desert-like habitats originally. Soil? Almost any soil will do, but they prefer fast-draining gritty soil, if you have that available.
Zinnia seeds are perfect for starting indoors to have bloom early. But be sure you wait until every frost is gone, and the soil has warmed up a bit before setting them out. They're super-sensitive to frost--after all. They're very undemanding. Zinnias can be used in a naturalized setting, or along borders & fences, along driveways or walkways & even directly in your butterfly garden. Bumblebees, hummingbirds, honeybees, swallowtails, monarchs & even ladybugs will cling to these beauties.
Zinnias have style, in addition to long, strong stems, so they are naturally destined for the vase. One last reason to plant zinnias year after year: they're butterfly magnets. The bigger-flowered varieties act like landing pads for nectar-seeking butterflies. (Same goes for hummingbirds.) Try tall zinnias with red or hot pink flowers to get the biggest draw.
Our zinnia seeds are non-gmo, freshly packed in the U.S. and ready to plant. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Zinnia Elegans are hardy annuals which germinates and establishes quickly to bloom all summer long. This seed mix features pom-pom like blossoms which comes in shades of white, orange, red, purple, pink, and salmon. Add zinnias to your flower garden to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Plant 2 - 4 flower seeds per plant or 9 pounds per acre.
