Asclepias tuberosa, also known as Butterfly Milkweed, Butterfly Weed, and Pleurisy Root, is a 2' to 3' tall native perennial with clusters of bright orange flowers that attract butterflies. Unlike many of the other milkweeds, this one prefers a dryer soil and must be planted in full sun. Another major difference between this plant and other milkweed is that this one does not have a milky sap. The orange and yellow blooms are out from mid Summer to early Fall, attracting all kinds of wildlife, including several different birds, bees, and butterflies, with the hummingbirds being especially interested in this plant.

This milkweed is a Host Plant for the Monarch and the Queen butterflies. In places where there is no oleander, cold stratification is very important for the germination and growth of Milkweed. It helps to break the seeds' natural dormancy cycle by exposing them to winter-like temperatures that help soften or crack their hard outer casing. Without prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, your milkweed seed is unlikely to sprout.

The seed is Pure Live Seed, US Native, not an introduced alien. Before planting, Milkweed seeds need to go through a period of cold stratification for better germination. The seeds are Non-GMO, Open Pollinated, and have a High Germination Rate. This Perennial Plant will Return Each Year in Zones 3 - 9.

In summary, Asclepias tuberosa is a unique and valuable addition to any garden, attracting a wide variety of pollinators and wildlife. Its bright orange flowers and distinct characteristics set it apart from other milkweed species. With proper cold stratification and planting conditions, this hardy perennial will thrive and provide years of enjoyment. Whether you're a gardener, a butterfly enthusiast, or simply appreciate the beauty of native plants, Asclepias tuberosa is a must-have for your landscape.
