Showy Milkweed (Asclepias Speciosa) is an ornamental native wildflower, perfect for home landscaping, the butterfly garden, or prairie meadow. It attracts hummingbirds as well. Showy Milkweed has up to 40-inch stems and large gray-green oval leaves that can be 5 inches in length. The flowers form on top of the stems and are rounded clusters of rosy-pink flowers. One plant can form a large clump by its spreading rhizomes.

After its second year, Showy Milkweed is quite drought tolerant, as the root system is not well-established the first year after growing from seed. A cold treatment is recommended to help these seeds germinate more quickly. Sow the seeds into small pots or trays filled with starter mix, press them into the soil but do not cover, and keep the seeds moist until germination. Once seedlings are established and all danger of frost has passed, they can be transplanted outdoors to their final growing location.
