The Common Milkweed (Asclepias Syriaca) is a bold, attractive plant with broad leaves and large clusters of pink blossoms. It draws many butterflies with its strong lilac-like fragrance and sweet nectar. It is sometimes called Butterfly Milkweed and is a host plant for Monarch butterfly larvae. In addition to attracting butterflies, Common Milkweeds are perfect for a naturalized setting, as they are a very attractive, easily controlled, and easily grown plant from flower seeds.
The Asclepias Syriaca is native to the Midwest and eastern U.S. and prefers full sun and loamy, mesic soil, but it can tolerate a wide variety of conditions. It has been used for various purposes over the years, and during World War II, its seed pods were collected in the northern states to be processed for the coma, which was used for flotation in life vests.
Growing Common Milkweed from flower seed is very rewarding. It is appropriate to sow Asclepias seeds outdoors after the frosts of fall have begun, as the cold, dormant planting will aid the germination of the seed in spring when temperatures warm. If sowing Common Milkweed seeds indoors or in a greenhouse, refrigerating the flower seed for 2 months before sowing will help to break the dormancy of the seed. To protect the seeds from hungry birds or heavy rains, cover them with a light fabric.
The "floss" of the Milkweed has been used throughout history by Native Americans for use in their textiles. Common Milkweed is a must-have plant for the butterfly garden, providing a wonderful source of nectar and being a host plant for butterfly larvae. It is a hardy plant that reaches about 32 inches in height, has large leaves, and produces very fragrant, large, pink flower clusters.
