About Our Seeds
Quick Facts
Grow Purple Coneflower from Fresh Echinacea Purpurea Wildflower Seeds
Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is renowned for attracting beneficial insects such as butterflies, bumblebees, ladybugs, and hummingbirds. These heirloom flowers, with their striking pale purple petals and spiny cone-like centers, have adorned gardens for generations.
As a perennial plant, Purple Coneflower develops a robust root system in its first year. During winter, the above-ground parts wilt while the roots remain dormant, re-emerging in the following growing season. Its low maintenance and prolonged flowering period make it ideal for borders and various garden settings.
Beyond its ornamental value, Echinacea Purpurea serves as a versatile herb, historically used to treat ailments ranging from common colds to snakebites. It is known to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, and possess antiviral and antioxidant properties.
Save The Honey Bees
Honey bees play a crucial role in pollinating a third of the world's crops. By planting flowers like Purple Coneflower, which attract honey bees and other pollinators, gardeners contribute to preserving these essential insects.
Sowing The Seed
Purple Coneflower seeds can be sown indoors or directly outdoors. Starting indoors with peat pots minimizes root shock upon transplanting. Outdoors, sow seeds shallowly (1/8" under topsoil) after the last frost. Ensure calm weather for outdoor sowing due to the shallow depth requirement.
Growing Conditions
Purple Coneflowers thrive in full sun to light shade and prefer temperatures of 70°F to 75°F. They tolerate short droughts but require well-drained soil. Incorporating light compost into compact soil enhances drainage. Water daily until germination occurs.
Germination & Growth
Seeds germinate within 7 to 21 days, growing into plants 24" to 36" tall and spreading 18" to 24" wide. Space seeds 12" to 18" apart. The plants bloom with pale purple flowers throughout summer, attracting a variety of beneficial insects.
